Interview with Holly Hewson

HH: Thank you for talking with us at TRS! It’s your 10th anniversary. What can you tell us about how you got your start?

VP: My partners and I began discussing opening a publishing company in 2003. We wanted to open a company that focused on the bygone era of romance which was much avoided by popular publishing houses. Our original premise was for historical era romances set in the 1900s through the 1959. Eventually, we expanded to 1969, but most of the books we acquired during that time period were the 1930s and 1940s.

We had the editorial knowledge, the marketing knowledge, and the legal backgrounds, but we had a lot of learning to do when it came to the actual publishing knowledge. We spent months doing a lot of studying, meeting and going over who would be doing what, and how we would proceed. We opened our doors on February 14, 2004.

HH:  What’s changed for your company in ten years?

VP: So much! We originally started as an e-publishing company before ebooks were all that popular. In 2005, we segued to paperbacks only. When the ebook market exploded, we reopened to digital books, and now we have audio books as well.

We’ve undergone name changes from Vintage Romance Publishing to Vintage Reflections Publishing to finally Vinspire Publishing.

As I mentioned above, we started out publishing only historical romances. We broadened our reach in 2007 until finally opening up even further in 2010.

One thing that hasn’t changed is the family-friendly premise of our books. We allow very little cursing, no extreme violence, and no open-door sex scenes. We’ve actually strengthened those restrictions over the past couple of years.

HH: What types of books do you offer at Vinspire Publishing?

VP: We have a little bit of everything now from historical romance to Young Adult to science fiction. We have murder mysteries, sagas, and humor as well as devotionals. We don’t publish horror, though.

HH: Are you open to submissions? If so where can prospective authors find guidelines for submission?

VP: We are open to limited submissions at this time, and readers can find our guidelines at

HH: What sorts of books are you actively seeking?

VP: We’d love to see more Regency Romances and romantic suspense. We’re also looking for Highlander romances, paranormal romances, science fiction, and fantasy romances.

HH: Tell us about the authors who publish with Vinspire?

VP: We have been fortunate to acquire a list of authors who bring so much to the craft. From bestselling authors to those just beginning the journey, they’re talented, creative, and motivated. They all have wonderful giving spirits and work hard to showcase their work which is all we can ask them to do. You can find the full list of our authors at, although we have several authors that have not yet been added.

HH: What can you tell us about your fabulous staff?

VP: That we wouldn’t be able to survive without them! This is definitely not a one man operation, and I’m been fortunate to find some of the top talent in the industry. They’re all hard-working and dedicated to their jobs. Our marketing director is always on the lookout for new ways to market our books and our authors, and because we recently added another acquisitions reader, we’ve been managing quicker turnaround times on our submissions. Overall, we have a wonderful staff who makes our jobs a lot easier.

HH: What sort of events do you hold for readers throughout the year?

VP: Every book releases gets a giveaway at Goodreads so basically once a month, we give away a free paperback book. We have newsletter contests, Twitter drawings for free books, and we’ve just recently started gift card giveaways on our Facebook page.

HH: Will you be making any appearances this year?

VP: If all goes according to plan, one of the big things we’ll be doing this year is exhibiting at the SC Book Festival May 16-18th in Columbia, SC. We wanted to do something that included all genres of our books, and SCBF does that.

HH: Where can readers and authors find you online?

VP: Not only do we have a website:, we’re also online at, on Twitter @vinspire2004. We’re active on Goodreads, Wattpad, Manic Readers, and Coming Soon to Pinterest!
