Her freedom depends on one man. A criminal to his realm…

Outlawed Realm, Book 4

One minute, Paige Ross is outside a Seattle bar, grieving a failed engagement. The next, she jerks awake in a weird, candlelit room with velvet walls, black silk sheets, and a man who motions for silence.

Paige has little choice but to trust the powerful stranger who promises a way out of what looks like Satan’s brothel. And pray his promise to keep her safe is as real as the heat burning in his eyes.

Banished from E2’s ruling elite for supposed crimes against the realm, Zekin risks everything to rescue those brought to E5 for the guards’ carnal pleasure. Paige will be leaving this inhospitable realm of fire and ice—if he can somehow forget the way her trembling body melts in his arms. Safe—temporarily—in an underwater world populated by strange creatures, Paige’s sexual awakening explodes into an unquenchable need that consumes them both. But the guards will be looking for her. And Zekin’s plan to send her home is a dangerous journey she cannot—will not—take without him.

Warning: Scorching-hot sex and loads of aching tenderness between a drool-worthy hunk who’s determined to do the right thing and a woman who’s not about to give him up.

Excerpt:

Two months before her wedding day, Paige Ross hadn’t expected to be fighting for her freedom and her life.

Her head pounded with the steady throb of a migraine, its searing pain keeping time with the rapid thumping of her pulse. The side of her neck stung. The skin was puffy and tender from something that had burned or bitten her. What could it have been? When had it happened?

Paige couldn’t recall. The last she remembered, she’d been guzzling a martini at Rozie’s, a Seattle watering hole where local  professionals got a buzz on after a hard day. Hers had been particularly brutal because of the shitty news she’d gotten from her fiancé. When tears had threatened to overwhelm her, she’d hurried into the alley for a little privacy, not wanting to embarrass herself. The next thing she knew, she’d woken up in here.

Wherever here was.

Please let me be dreaming this.

Even as she prayed, Paige knew what she’d begged for wasn’t possible. Her head hurt too badly and her senses recorded too many details for this to be nothing more than the world’s worst nightmare.

What appeared to be velvet covered the walls. Some of the panels were red, the others a deep scarlet. Black candles, not lamps, lit the space. Black silk sheets draped the bed she was on.

Paige groaned, then promptly froze. Don’t make any noise, she warned herself. If you do, someone might come inside.

She stared at the door, suddenly realizing this room had one. After rolling off the bed, Paige swayed on her feet, then gaped at the floor. It appeared to be made of stone, possibly granite. However, it was warm, as though there was a heat source beneath it.

Frowning, she noticed her feet were bare. No high heels or stockings. A quick search told Paige the items weren’t in here, nor was her purse. She hesitated, then slipped her hand beneath the velvet hangings. Holy crap.

The stone walls were icy, as though this room lay inside a refrigerated meat locker.

Whimpering, she snatched back her hand and regarded her clothing, relieved she still wore her power suit, blouse and underwear. The thought of someone touching her or undressing—

Uh-uh. No way was she going there. Right now, she was alone. If she got hysterical and started to scream, someone might come in here to find out why or to shut her up.

She stared at the door, then screwed up enough courage to try it. Locked.

She searched the room for a weapon and settled on one of the candleholders. Made of metal, the fixture felt nicely heavy in her hand.

With one well-placed whack, she could knock out the psycho who’d brought her here. Then she’d run like hell before he could—

Paige’s thoughts paused. She forgot to breathe at the sound of footfalls, the steady tap-tap-tap of someone approaching the door.

Skittering away from it, she bumped into the mattress, then thought better of being anywhere near the bed. She gripped the  candleholder as hard as she could and went to the side of the door, hiding behind it so when her captor came inside she could clobber him.

The footfalls stopped.

Paige lifted the holder above her head.

Nothing happened. Had he changed his mind? Was he going to—

The knob turned. She focused on it as she’d never done with anything else before. To the right it went, to the left, as though the psycho was testing it. Didn’t he know the damn thing was locked? Had he lost the key?

Oh shit.

Then she’d never get out of here.

She pressed her lips together to keep from making any noise. Her heart slammed against her chest, her arms ached from the candleholder’s weight, her migraine pounded.

She squeezed her eyes, hoping it would relieve some of the pain.

A key turned, and the door swung inward.

The sound galvanized her. Blindly, she brought down the holder and hit the knob rather than the man. The metal ting drowned out her gasp.

She’d expected a troll. Even through her panic, Paige could see this guy was possibly in his early thirties, tall, with olive skin and black hair combed away from his forehead. Dressed in what seemed to be camouflage gear, he was surprisingly good-looking and seemed sane, though troubled.

Why? Was he a member of a SWAT team sent to save her? Did the operation tank and now he was a prisoner too? If so, how in the hell had he escaped his room to come into hers?

Wait a sec. This wasn’t her room. She wanted out of here.

Before she could flee, he took the candleholder from her all too easily, closed the door and put his forefinger to his lips, indicating she needed to be quiet.

The sounds she’d repressed earlier poured from her now.

“Don’t make any noise,” he whispered, “or the others will come.”

Others? There was more than one maniac to worry about? What about him?

His thick accent sounded Greek or Middle-Eastern. Even if he did look really good, Paige didn’t know him.

“Who are—”

“Who I am doesn’t matter.”

The hell it didn’t. “Why are you here?”

“Do you want to go home?” he asked.

“Are you kidding? Of course, I do.” Big freaking time.

“Then you’ll have to trust me.” He offered her his hand.

For the first few seconds, she couldn’t move. And then she realized she could either go with him or stay here and wait for the unknown maniac.

They couldn’t be one in the same.

Paige forced herself to take his hand. His palm felt dry, nicely warm.

Gently, he curled his fingers around hers. Hardly the touch of a lunatic.

“I’ll do all I can to bring you back to E1,” he said.

“What? Where?”

He didn’t answer. After pulling open the door, he led her into a candlelit hall.

Interview with Holly Hewson

HH: Tina, thank you for talking with us at The Romance Studio. Your featured book is Stolen Desire and is the fourth book in your Outlawed Realm series. First, where did you get the idea for the series?

TD: Thanks for having me here today!

I was thinking about the next book I was planning to write, when suddenly I imagined what it would be like if someone could see me as I was watching TV and thinking. Not in a bad way, like a stalker or anything. But if they could somehow view me from their world without me knowing it. The more I thought about that, the more intrigued I became. What, I wondered, would Earth be like if it had more than the one dimension we know. What if there were several, all populated, but the other people couldn’t see us – and we couldn’t see them – because of time differentials.

The dimensions would look something like this graphic with E1 (Earth as we know it) being on the top (closest to the sun) and the other dimensions, E2, E3, etc. being beneath it.

However, there would be portals connecting the different realms. And it’s through these portals that someone could see you.

I then thought of my hero seeing the heroine, knowing she was in danger, and his desire to keep her from harm. After that, all the pieces fell into place.

HH: What can you tell us about the first three books?

TD: In Unending Desire, book one of the series, the hero comes from E2, a place where everything is controlled, emotion isn’t allowed, all the men look the same. All the women are identical in appearance. He comes to Seattle (E1) to rescue the heroine from certain death. Imagine his shock in seeing our messy, vibrant world after being so restricted in his own. In book two, Illicit Desire, I wrote about E4, a world of twilight and jungles. E2’s rulers have built a palace there where they enjoy pleasure slaves. These slaves aren’t born, they’re grown in artificial wombs to begin a lifetime of servitude to their masters. Shameless Desire, book three, again takes place in Seattle. One of the shifters from E4’s jungle has crossed over. Like the hero in Unending Desire, he needs to warn the heroine of danger.

HH: How does Stolen Desire continue it?

TD: Stolen Desire, book four, takes place on E5, a dimension of ice and fire. Paige, my heroine, awakes to find herself in a world she can’t comprehend, faced with a man she doesn’t know but has to trust. Her life and freedom, their future depends upon it.

While I was writing Stolen Desire, I kept think of Avatar, the sense of wonder I had as the story unfolded. That’s what I strove for in my tale. To create a world so unique, thrilling, dangerous, and in many ways beautiful, that a reader couldn’t help but be enthralled.

There’s also a moving love story, and yes—lots of hot sex. J

Excerpt:

Zekin wondered if Paige had closed her eyes and figured she had, given how she ran into him, her shoulder bumping his back.

“Sorry,” she cried.

Zekin nodded in acknowledgment, not certain she noticed or could even comprehend his response given her panic. She huffed as she tried to keep up with him, and stumbled again, her body ramming against his. He staggered briefly before regaining his balance. To keep both of them steady, Zekin wrapped his arm around Paige’s waist to help her across the foreboding terrain.

In the distance, he heard the faint rumbling of an ice tsunami, the spitting and crackling sounds warning this dimension’s creatures to flee or risk its mammoth weight pulverizing them. The mountain of ice was faintly visible now and moving quickly past the enormous drifts. Zekin figured they had just enough time to reach the route to the colony before the tsunami arrived.

Paige swallowed loudly, then gulped air at his quickened pace, the sounds transmitted from her facemask to his. She rested her free hand on his chest. “Thanks for holding on to me. I’m having trouble walking… Thanks.”

The heat of her fingers quickened Zekin’s already rapid pulse. Her gratitude soothed and humbled him. She still had no idea what they faced but trusted him far more than when he’d entered her room, a cage decorated with rich velvet, silk and candlelight, built by the guards. Thankfully, none of them followed now. If they had, Zekin wouldn’t have been able to fight all of them off. He’d used most of his darts at their outpost. With only a few shots left, he had only his fists for added defense.

Tightening his arm around Paige, Zekin held her close, keeping her as safe as he could. He’d promised her that. Although he was a criminal on E2, sentenced to imprisonment and death in this harsh realm, he wasn’t a man who went back on his word, even if it meant murdering others.

There’d been a time in Zekin’s life when he would have experienced horror and remorse at what he’d done to the guards. No more. Paige’s anguish when he’d first seen her told him all he needed to know. No matter what it took, even if it meant his life, he had to help her.

He recalled how she’d looked when he promised to bring her home. Something had shifted within her, the emotion sparking briefly in her eyes, a hazel shade that complemented her pale skin and light blonde hair. She wore it parted on the side and chin length, the ends turned up slightly.

Hardly the kind of female the rulers craved. Zekin sensed the guards had abducted her because she’d been available, unprotected. Unlike the female pleasure slaves who were designed to be perfect women, Paige wasn’t beautiful. Her features were ordinary…until she smiled. A radiant smile, the most dazzling he’d ever seen.

It had reached her eyes, and, strangely enough, had touched his soul.

Zekin wasn’t certain what to make of it. He’d been raised in a culture where emotions weren’t allowed. Duty to the realm mattered above all for the populace. Only Vakar, their highest ruler, and his inner circle were exempt. At least when they visited E4’s Pleasure Palace, created for their basest desires. Few of Vakar’s subjects knew the place existed. For the majority of the citizens, there was no indulgence in raw lust, no displays of love, anger, joy. Their conditioning precluded that. Order ruled.

Zekin’s world was nothing like what he knew of Paige’s.

As a privileged boy, he’d studied the major languages on Earth and the life on each of its dimensions. Hers had alarmed and fascinated him. There was so much chaos, wars and tragedies interrupted by brief moments of indescribable joy. A man adoring a woman who felt the same about him. The ecstasy of creating new life. Loyalty to one’s children and family that made even the worst situation bearable and all things possible.

Values that his teachers and parents had denigrated, warning against them.

How foolish they’d been. How stupid he was for having believed them.

He continued to marvel at the weight of Paige’s hand on his chest, the comfort of her body nestled against his. She was a tall woman, her ample curves far more feminine and natural than the narrow waists and too slender thighs of the female slaves and the women on E2. To Zekin’s way of thinking, Paige was rounded and soft as a woman should be. Yet, he’d seen her unease as she’d undressed. It appeared to reach deeper than being watched by a man she didn’t know. It was as though she were ashamed of her—

“Oh my God,” she cried, breaking into his thoughts. “What’s that?”

The first wave of the ice tsunami creaked upward. Taller than all the drifts, it blocked out what scant light bled through the clouds.

With little time to spare, Zekin headed for the next body of water, now only a few yards away. From several areas of it, frail threads of steam trailed upward before the wind blew them apart. Quickly, Zekin pulled Paige onto the barely frozen surface.

“What are you doing?” she cried.

He yelled above the noise of the crashing ice, “Hold on to me.”

Wait.

Zekin couldn’t, not if they were going to live through this. Pressing the length of his body to hers, he kept one arm around her waist, and wrapped the other across her shoulders so she couldn’t break free.

Clearly terrified, she tried.

He tilted their bodies to the right.

They hit the fragile ice, breaking through it, falling into the water just as the tsunami crashed above them.

HH: What do you like best about Paige and why will readers like her?

TD: Paige is a good person. She’s been treated badly by her former fiancé, then finds herself in a nightmare world. Although she’s terrified, she’s also strong and does what she can to survive and to also protect Zekin. She’s a sweetheart.

HH: What do you like best about Zekin and why will readers love him?

TD: Zekin’s been wrongfully imprisoned by his realm, but that hasn’t made him bitter. He’s brave and commanding, and risks his life to save Paige. He’s everything I’d like in a guy. Hotter than sin and filled with integrity. Wow.

HH:  What else do you have in store for lucky readers?

TD: Seven Sensuous Days, Book Four in my Appointment with Pleasure series, released from Ellora’s Cave on March 5. It’s a very hot tale with an incredibly moving romance.

HH: What experience or experiences in your writing career have defined you to this point?

TD: When I first started writing, I thought it would only be about writing. Wasn’t aware of all the promo that also had to be done. I’m shy by nature, so I had to learn to be more assertive.

HH: What goals have you set for yourself at this point in your career?

TD: To write the best stories I can. It’s really the only thing a writer has control over. You never know what fans or the market will demand.

HH: What do you enjoy reading?

TD: Everything. As a kid, I’d read the backs of cereal boxes if nothing else was available. I love stories with depth, such as The Millennium Trilogy (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, etc.), The Lovely Bones, The Handmaid’s Tale. Wow, great books.

HH: Where can readers find you online?
