Kenneth Hailey, an uptight, conservative mathematician, believes he’s in control. After all, every problem can be solved in a deliberate and logical manner. Even love. When his fiancée dumps him for his best friend, he leaves Manhattan for the West Coast. What better place to forget his past. It’s 1967, and San Francisco is the place to turn on, tune in and drop out.

But is he ready for Rose Red?

Rose Red, a free-spirited flower child, challenges Kenneth, thrusting him into her world of love-ins, protest rallies and rock concerts. Kenneth finds himself falling down a rabbit hole, hanging on for dear life.

Old habits die hard, and he retreats, but Rose Red has other plans for him.

Set in San Francisco during the turbulent sixties, Rose Red has a startling revelation of her own.

Rose patted his hand. “Forget it. You already said too much. You think girls don’t have the brains for math. We’re too emotional for such discipline. So do you want to sleep with me?”

Kenneth choked, and a spray of coffee spurted across the table, barely missing Rose. He wiped up the mess with his napkin, while muttering an apology. “I might be behind the times, but I like to be the one to invite the girl to bed.”

“If I waited for you to make the first move we’d never get past first base.”

“There’s the unwritten teacher-student rule.”

“You said our paths would never cross, so why worry about it? Do you always follow the rules? We can bend them a little. I’m not talking about a relationship here.”

“You’re talking about loving the one you’re with.” He smiled at himself for using her phrase. The sunlight broke through the window and Rose’s hair shone a burnished copper. Luscious, silky hair he’d like to touch again. “What do you mean by bend?”

“We can sleep together, and since we’re not looking for love, and we’re not each other’s type, and don’t want to—”

“—form any attachments.”

Rose sat back and crossed her arms. “Are you going to let me finish my sentence?”

Kenneth sank in his chair, uncomfortable with the conversation, but riveted.

“Yes, since we don’t want any attachments,” she continued, “it would be ideal. What do you say?”

He scratched his chin. “So I’m going to love the one I’m with after all? I don’t know.”

Rose waved off Kenneth’s worried expression. “Sex can be fantastic, and I’m horny, been without it—”

“—for a day?”

One or two of espresso is what gets Viki going in the morning! What inspires Viki – the reality that romance between lovers is a hope more than a guarantee. Her stories are sexy, but it’s always romance that drives the story to its final happily-ever-after.

She considers herself eclectic and weird, and claims if she loves a TV series it will be canceled by the next season!  She’s worn many hats, working in corporate finance to owning her own art gallery, but writing has been long lasting.

Interview with Holly Hewson

HH: Viki, thank you so much for talking with us at TRS. Your featured book is Formula For Love. Where did you get the idea for this romantic tale?

VL: I’m grew up around the Bay Area (San Francisco) and love San Francisco and the surrounding area. My older sister went to UC Berkeley during the height of the protest movements in the late sixties. I remember visiting and being in awe of the long hair hippies and flower children and the vibrant energy of the Haight. I wanted to capture this time in a book.

HH:  What do you like best about Rose and what will readers like about her?

VL: What I love about Rose — she’s feisty and wears her emotions outwardly, and she is willing to take risks. Rose desperately wants to be her own person and struggles with her identity. Wanting to reinvent yourself is not always easy, and many women can relate to this. Rose’s past is part of her and she needs to reconcile the past with the present.

HH:  What do you like best about Kenneth and why will readers love him?

VL: While at times readers will find him exasperating, Kenneth is a protector and will do anything for Rose. He can be rigid and uptight but his character grows and changes with the times. He loves Rose and wants her to be happy.

HH:  What makes this work different than anything you’ve written so far?

VL: I’ve been writing male/male romance for a few years, so this is my attempt to get back into the male/female market. This is a re-release, the original title Long Strange Trip. I wanted to bring this story to more readers so it was edited and fleshed out with the help of my terrific editor at Musa. It’s a better story the second time around.

HH:  What else do you have in store for lucky readers?

VL: I have a vampire m/m series co-authored with Vina Grey titled For The Bite Of It – an Orbus Arcana book. Again, the first book is a re-release with an additional ending and again, more fleshed out than the first edition. The next two books are brand new. And I have a new m/f Edwardian romance to be published by Musa and set for an August release. I tend to love setting my male/female romances in the past!

HH: What inspires you in your writing?

VL: Hearing from my readers really energizes me. Listening into other people’s conversations! LOL

HH:  What do you enjoy when you’re not writing?

VL: Traveling, spending time with family and friends, reading, watching movies, reading yaoi, playing on my Playstation and iPad!

HH:  What are you reading?

VL: Lex Valentine’s Entangled. Embracing Love and Hide and Seek manga series.

HH:  What goals have you set for yourself this year?

VL: Publish! I didn’t write last year so I really want to get a few books published in 2014. So far Formula For Love and the Orbus Arcana series is good to go, and I have a few more books in the works. We’ll see how my time works out.

HH:  Where can readers find you online?

VL: I’m on Facebook and Twitter and Google’s Circle. Here are some of my links:
