Jada is a mountain hollar witch and a child bride, though very little of girlhood remains in her heart or body. A victim of incest, Jada is a survivor unable to face her own shadows. She longs to take root—to stand her ground against vile memories, instead of hiding from them. Spirit-touched, Jada seeks lessons and insight from the gods of her Nordic ancestors–uncomfortable, intimate lessons that force her to embrace her true self and her abuser. With Norse gods Loki and Thor as her patrons, can Jada sink roots before spreading her wings in reclamation of her true self?

Interview with Holly Hewson
HH: Darragha, thank you so much for talking with us at TRS. Your featured book is Roots Before Wings. What can you tell us about this amazing story?
DF: Jada is a unique heroine, in that she is a mountain holler witch and was raised in the old ways. She married young to escape abuse and trusts that the old gods got her back. Since she’s based on a “real-life person” whom I interviewed thoroughly for the book, I find her to be quite refreshing.
HH: What do you like best about Jada and why will readers identify with her?
DF: She’s real Jada is based on a real woman, spell-worker and devotee of the old gods. She’s married, has kids and is the one who told me that the crones in the hills are called “granny.” She’s a feisty woman and isn’t afraid to stand up for injustice. I like her style
HH: What makes this story from any of your other works?
DF: This is the first time I’ve written a novel based on a “real” person who is currently alive and kicking. Each part of the process was shared with and approved by this “real life person.”
HH: Part of the earnings from this book go to a charity. What can you tell us about this?
DF: Part of the proceeds of the sales for RBW are going to the Maetreum of Cybele, a Pagan monastery that provides shelter for women who are escaping domestic abuse. If you’d like to learn more about the Maetreum, you can visit their website at: http://www.gallae.com/ or their Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/Maetreum
HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers?
DF: I have a paranormal wildlands firefighter novel coming out on 6/6 from Forever More Publishing. “Consumed” involves a love triangle between two hot shots and “Lady Fire,” who is one jealous b*tch.
HH: What goals have you set for yourself this year?
DF: To continue eating and sleeping indoors. Oh, you want serious goals? Tell ya what…I’ll share my personal goals with readers who share theirs with me. Maybe we can work toward our goals together that way. They can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org and put GOALS in the subject heading.
HH: What appearances will you make this year – online or in person?
DF: I’m always online. You want me to appear? Poof! Here I am.
HH: What do you do when you aren’t writing?
DF: Living the good life in a 600 square foot mobile home near a forested park with a handsome husband, 2 cats and 2 dogs.
HH: What are you reading?
This guy is my across-the-street-neighbor and was best man at our wedding 25 years ago. Who knew he could write?
HH: Where can readers find you online?
DF: Facebook is good! https://www.facebook.com/DarraghaFoster
